This breed is a determined hunter and an excellent working sled dog. Elkhounds are sensitive and need gentle, firm training. Elkhounds like to be outside in cooler temperatures. However, this dog can adapt to apartment life if it has enough exercise.

Scandinavian grave sites dating back to the Stone Age have yielded the remains of dogs similar to the Norwegian Elkhound.
