Norwegian Elkhound Rescue Information: The Norwegian Elkhound is a prototypical Spitz-type dog. Elkhounds are loyal companions and are wonderful with children and friends of the family. Elkhounds make excellent non-vicious guard dogs. This breed is a determined hunter and an excellent working sled dog. Elkhounds are sensitive and need gentle, firm training. Elkhounds like to be outside in cooler temperatures. However, this dog can adapt to apartment life if it has enough exercise.

Norwegian Elkhound Trivia: Norwegian Elkhounds date back thousands of years B.C. and were used by cavemen for hunting. In Norway, all privately owned Elkhounds can be appropriated by the Minister of Defense for military use if the nation goes to war. Elkhounds can hunt better at night than in the daytime. Elkhounds can smell moose, elk, and other big game from miles away. Scandinavian grave sites dating back to the Stone Age have yielded the remains of dogs similar to the Norwegian Elkhound.
